STANDARD TWO: Instructional Leadership
A. Focus on Learning and Teaching, Curriculum, Instruction and assessment: The school executive leads the discussion about standards for curriculum, instruction and assessment based on research and best practices in order to establish and achieve high expectations for students.
Throughout the school year, I have facilitated Instructional Coaches Meeting with the IC team, then push out the PDs/meetings with the the Full Staff Agenda that was decided based on our discussion in the IC Meeting. IC Meetings happen weekly on Mondays, and have 1-3 main goals: 1) Instruction Coach Development Activity (In this case, was watching/analyzing a video that codified how to help a teacher internalize their upcoming lesson) 2) Walkthrough of the school (In this case, we found that teachers were struggling to let students grapple with the most rigorous concepts of the class, and needed development in facilitating rigorous discussion that allowed students to productively struggle with the concept) 3) Plan next steps (In this case, the biggest next step was leading the full staff in how to lead effective "batch process" discussion) ICs then volunteered to lead and/or co-lead the Professional Development for teachers on Friday to be prepared to "win" at the PD action step the following week (In this case, me and another IC co-created and led the PD) |
B. Focus on Instructional Time: The school executive creates processes and schedules which protect teachers from disruptions of instructional or preparation time.
At the beginning of the year, I led a series of meetings with the Leadership Team to create the schedule that protects teachers' planning time. From collaborating with the Leadership Team, the linked schedule was formed, which provided teachers planning each day during the school day, as well as from 4:10-5:00pm each day. During this 50 minutes, teachers either continue to meet with Instructional Coaches, or individually prepare and plan as needed. |
